CLAY COUNTY, Fla. -- The Clay County Sheriff's Office has identified a suspect that investigators believe is responsible for two hit-and-run crashes Monday in Clay County.

The suspect is a 75-year-old male who has serious medical issues, according to CCSO spokesperson Mary Justino. Deputies were initially going to arrest him, but decided it would be better for him to be hospitalized at Orange Park Medical Center even though he was not injured.

Around 2 p.m. CCSO responded to reports of a driver in a four-door vehicle driving erratically, Justino said.

The deputies pursued the driver after a hit-and-run crash on County Road 220 on Fleming Island, and another at Blanding Boulevard and Bear Run in Middleburg, Justino said.

Deputies were able to stop the car by flattening the tires using stop sticks at College Avenue and Peoria Avenue in Orange Park.

The drivers and passengers of the two cars the suspect hit were not injured, Justino said. Their vehicles had minor damage.

The investigation into the man's reckless driving and eluding arrest is still ongoing, Justino said.
