MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, Ohio -- The UPS shipping hub in Middleburg Heights is large enough to fit five football fields inside of it, and this time of year is when UPS and its employees put their game faces on.

"Peak season is our Super Bowl," says Carol Bianchi, transportation operations execellence manager for UPS.

'Tis the season for millions of people to ship holiday greetings to family and friends near and far.

In all, UPS expects to ship 28 million packages on its busiest shipping day of the year -- Dec. 20. That breaks down to 300 packages delivered every second that day.

"It's just like a clock," says Bianchi. "It just keeps going."

Like clockwork, 200 trucks cycle through the Middleburg Heights hub nightly, carrying part of the 135 million packages UPS expects to deliver in the week before Christmas.

Technology has played a big role in making sure those packages are delivered quickly, Bianchi says.

"Years ago, [shipping] was a very manual job," she explains. "We've made use of technology greatly, so that our sorting and other processes are much more efficient now.

But, she adds, the best way to ensure a package arrives in time for the holidays is to get it in the mail early.
