LONDON - Police in London say a helicopter has crashed during rush hour in central London after hitting what appears to be a construction crane on top of a building.
"We are aware of 11 casualties: 2 people confirmed dead, 4 taken to hospital (1 critical), 5 treated at scene," Metropolitan Police said in a statement.
Transport for London officials said in a statement that there are road closures and bus diversions in the Vauxhall area of the capital city, which is close to the River Thames and the British spy agency MI6.
The London Fire Brigade said it was called at 8 a.m. local time to a report of a crash on Wandsworth Road on the south bank of the Thames.
A photo shown on Sky News showed wreckage burning in a street, and a large plume of black smoke was seen rising in the area.
