JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Expect a crowd of thousands in Metro Park Thursday. It is all to get on the wait list for a for Section 8 housing voucher.
The chance to enroll on the waiting list started early this morning and will run through 5 p.m. at Metro Park. The Section 8 Housing Program allows low-income families to rent safe, privately owned places to live and the subsidy payments are made by the housing authority to the owners on behalf of the family.
Larry Gonzalez, who is the Senior Director of Section 8, said demand is up due to the economy, but they have a limited number of spots.
Each household can only submit one pre-application and each applicant must bring a photo ID.
This year, the Jacksonville Housing Authority is selecting the Section 8 waiting list through a lottery program.
"It doesn't matter if you are first in line or last in line. Due to the lottery system, everybody would have an equal chance of being selected to get on a waiting list," tells Gonzalez.
All applications must be done in person at the Metro Park location today before 5 p.m.
If a person submits false information or more than one application per household, that person will be disqualified.
