JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The River City made a splash on the national front with Forbes Magazine ranking Jacksonville as the second-fastest tech services base in the country.

Austin, Texas grabbed the top spot.

The First Coast has made a concerted effort to promote its tech base that's in place to support businesses like banks and insurance companies. Forbes research believes the city has what it takes to compete with bigger cities.

The First Coast has its lowest unemployment rate in four years standing at 7.4 percent.

Last year, JAXUSA, an extension of the chamber of commerce, said 3,000 jobs were created locally last year with another 1,000 retained that could have been lost.

In Jacksonville Beach, Homeparts is opening shop with technology driving the home improvement store.

The concept store offers home essentials and fixtures with customers having the option to go one of nine computer kiosks and order items not on the shelf with delivery promised hours later.

The store that will open soon has a team of 12 in place, a dozen new jobs.

Peter Ouellette is a new hire after months hunting for a full-time job.

"I got a call, I pretty much dropped everything and came here," said," said the 23 year-old man.

This year, JAXUSA says it has 52 business prospects with the end result of 1,000 new jobs if they come through.
