Motel clerk jailed for allegedly tipping off fugitive

ST JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. - A motel clerk is accused of tipping off a guest that U.S. Marshals were looking for her.

The motel clerk, Wayne Scott Mort, 53, allegedly tipped off Leanna Marie Obrien, 26 that she was being sought by U.S. Marshals, according to a release from the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.

Obrien allegedly stole her grandmother's car, a 2012 Kia Sorento, out of Elkton Wednesday night, according to the SJCSO release. Obrien had been sought since Wednesday evening for the theft.

The 2012 Kia Sorento was recovered around 6 a.m. Thursday morning in the parking lot of the Quality Inn on S.R. 16 in St. Augustine, according to the release. Obrien was not with the vehicle when it was recovered.

Deputies found two different suspects in possession of the Kia; 17-year-old Brandon Cheques Rich and 31-year-old Kimberly Lashane Davis.

Obrien was located at a Days Inn on S.R. 16 in St. Augustine. Mort allegedly admitted to deputies that he called Obrien to inform her that the U.S. Marshals were looking for her. Obrien was found walking away from a vacant building adjacent to the motel where she was apprehended without further incident.
Obrien is facing two counts of vehicle theft and is currently being held in the St Johns County Jail with a $10,000 bond. Obrien is also charged with grand theft auto for another incident that occurred in Dec. of last year.

Rich faces charges of dealing in stolen property.

Mort was charged with obstruction was charged with obstruction for allegedly tipping off Obrien that she was being sought and was released early Friday morning after posting a $500 bond.
