BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- The mother of a slain baby spoke out Friday to First Coast News.
Sherry West, 41, told First Coast News that she was walking on London Street pushing her son in a stroller when the two suspected baby-killers approached her. The individual with the gun appeared to be approximately 15-years-old and demanded money and was accompanied by a younger boy.
West told the suspect that she didn't have any money, so he shot at her, and the bullet grazing her left ear then he shot her again in the thigh. The bullet is still lodged inside of her leg. She claims that the suspect then shot her 13-month-old son in the face.
"I don't know if it was racially motivated or if it was drug related, but it was for money. And he threatened to kill us both. So I was... I tried to protect my baby, but I thought it [the gun] was fake, and I thought he would never do it in day light," said Sherry West.
At first, West thought the gun was a fake because a shell casing wasn't released when the suspect fired at the ground. Police haven't verified whether or not a shot was actually fired into the ground.
She believes the suspect would of shot her even if she had money to give the suspect.
"I don't know whether it was me, targeted me, or whether it was any body. But I'm leaving by the end of the month, I can't stay here. "
