Bradenton, Florida -- An 11-year-old boy's father shot and killed their family dog after it bit the child's finger off, and possibly broke part of his arm, Hernando County deputies said Friday.
According to their report, the boy walked up to the dog's cage and stuck his hand through a slot to pet it, when all of the sudden, it bit his left hand and completely severed his pinky finger.
Officials said the attack may also have been forceful enough to break the boy's forearm.
Just after the incident, the child's father reportedly let the dog out of its cage, and shot it several times until it died.
Then, as the family waited for medical personnel to arrive, the man reportedly retrieved his son's severed finger from inside the dog's stomach.
Bayflight arrived shortly after and transported the child to All Childrens Hospital.
According to officials, their preliminary investigation supports the father's explanation of the accident.
Animal Control responded and took possession of the dog's remains.
