JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The First Coast Tea Party got its tax exemption from the Internal Revenue Service after a 27-month wait and after submitting four pounds of paperwork.

"That does seem just a little bit over the top," said Leanne King, the organization's executive director.

This week, the head of the IRS resigned after it came to light conservative groups were being singled out for special scrutiny.  President Obama on Thursday said he found the agencies actions "unacceptable" vowing to fix the problem.

Locally, the Tea Party said it made application in August 2010 only to learn in early 2012 it needed to answer more detailed questions, eleven altogether.

"What we were asked was a different set of questions than another group was asked. I remember hearing one leader say she got 35 questions to answer," said Carol McManus, a charter member of the First Coast Tea Party involved in the preparing the IRS application.

The local Tea Party got news of its application being approved weeks after the November general election.
