LAKE CITY, Fla. -- Charges have been filed against Micheal Norman, 26, an accidental shooting that killed 11-year-old Jarvis Jackson, according to the Lake City Police Department.
The Lake City press release states that Norman was in the apartment babysitting a group of children while their mother was away.
Norman said he brought the Rugar 9mm gun to the apartment because he did not feel safe, the release detailed.
"I bought it from a guy off of the street in White Springs a few weeks ago," said Norman.
The firearm was allegedly left unsecured, visible and accessible on the kitchen table while he slept. According to the release, he woke up around 8 a.m. to the sound of a gunshot.
A 4- and 2- year-old child were playing with the gun when it accidentally shot Jackson in the neck and killed him.
Norman is charged with one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm with altered serial numbers, and aggravated manslaughter. He has not yet been arrested according to Lake City Police Department.
