So many of us have taken the guided tours in historic spots like St. Augustine and Jekyll Island.

But the question is: How do any of us really know what the guides are telling us is truth.
It's all about trust. But the folks at Jekyll are taking it a step further and tour guides better have a No. 2 pencil handy.

Thousands of people come to Jekyll Island each year for a taste of some history. So the tour guide industry does just fine here.

Cynthia Miles has done it ten years, giving tours, driving the tram.

And it's an industry that takes a lot of pride in getting the facts right.

"We understand lots of folks make their livelihood this way. So we're trying to work with their operations," said Eric Garvey with the Jekyll Island Authority.

Garvey said they have proposed a test all tour guides would have to take to work the island.

"Public is coming in, Paying for the tour, Want to make sure they're getting the most value for their dollar," Garvey said.

He said there are a half dozen tour vendors working the island now but expects that number to grow. Some established guides say it's not fair.

"A lot of people have test anxiety ... "

But Miles isn't one of those.

That new test ordinance will be voted on July 15.
In the meantime, if you're skeptical ask your tour guide tough questions, Like, where'd your learn all this fancy stuff?
