A teen was shot in the neck by a stray bullet while watching the Miami Heat game on his living room couch Thursday.
Brandon Reid, 14, was in his second-floor Miramar apartment at 2140 Sherman Circle North just before midnight when the bullet pierced through the top of the sliding glass door that opens up to the apartment's balcony.
Stepfather Daryl Denson said doctors were able to remove the bullet completely and said Reid is expected to make a full recovery.
"We're grateful to God that this kid is as strong as he is and that he's still with us," Denson said. "I'm absolutely blessed."
Denson said Reid is in good spirits at Memorial Regional Hospital.
Several neighbors said they initially thought the shots were fireworks.
"I thought about it and then I heard the sirens," neighbor Ayanna Kokayi said. "I looked out my window, there was an ambulance and the cops and screaming."
Officials believe the gunshots were fired in celebration after the Miami Heat victory.
"I don't think you need to be shooting over a basketball game," neighbor Jimmy Sutton said. "Beat on the pans like everybody else does."
Police are actively searching for the shooter. Anyone with information is urged to contact Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
