JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Minister and civil rights leader Jesse Jackson visited Jacksonville on Tuesday. One of his stops included the Duval County Jail where Marissa Alexander is being held.

Alexander is the woman serving a mandatory 20-year sentence for a gun crime.

She contends she was firing a warning shot against her abusive husband.

No one was injured in this case.

Jackson met with her inside the jail, he said, to keep her hopes up during her appeal process.

"She is in good spirits, has great resolve," Jackson said in a briefing after their meeting. "We want to work diligently with appropriate officials to review this case."

He explained that he feels there is hypocrisy in the judicial system. He specifically referenced George Zimmerman, who admitted to killing Trayvon Martin and was acquitted of all charges.

"She fired a warning shot, and for that she was arrested and convicted for the excessive amount of 20 years in jail," he said.

Jackson is hosting a rally at Mt. Olive Primitive Baptist Church in Jacksonville on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.
