JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A 72-year-old woman was shot in the leg when an intruder entered her house at about 4 a.m. Monday morning, according to a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office police report.
At a home in the 1300 block of Labelle Street the victim awoke to a strange noise and allegedly found a man in the hallway. The report detailed, that the woman called out for her husband, who was in another bedroom, when the suspect shot her in the left thigh.
The victim went for her gun that was in her dresser drawer. According to the report, her husband woke up to the gunshot and ran into the other room where he grabbed the gun from her.
The husband allegedly shot in the direction of the fleeing suspect, the report detailed.
The investigation confirmed that the suspect entered through the dining room window, where JSO allegedly found the window screen taken off and the window up.
Additionally, the back door was found unlocked and open. According to the report, items were knocked over in the den and no possessions were stolen.
The victim is being treated for serious injuries at UF Health at Jacksonville.
