JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Dozens of local department of defense civilians and their spouses voiced their concerns at a meeting at St. Johns River State College in Orange Park on Monday.
The mandatory pay cuts are forcing many to get a second job just to help cover their bills.
Approximately 650,000 Department of Defense civilians, including locals from NAS Jax, are being forced to take 11 furlough days between July 8 and Sept. 30, a 20 percent cut in salary over that span.
Four weeks into the pay cuts, some of the engineers who work on airplanes at the base are looking for work.
According to the Merit Systems Protection Board, the agency that handles federal appeals, 10,000 people filed an appeal in the month of July.
