NAVAL STATION NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- The Navy will soon start restricting the hours alcohol can be sold on its bases, moving alcohol displays to the rear of its stores and making alcohol-detection devices available for purchase.

The order was issued by Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jonathan Greenert. The move is part of the Navy's efforts to curb alcohol abuse in its ranks, which frequently plays a role in sexual assaults and other destructive behaviors.

Greenert also ordered the Virginia Beach-based Navy Exchange Command to limit the floor space exchanges dedicate to alcohol displays to no more than 10 percent of the retail floor space available.

The new hours will limit alcohol sales to between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.

The changes are set to take effect by mid-October.
