JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Students go back to school Monday in Duval County.
For one school in Jacksonville, it was time to open its doors on Saturday morning to welcome parents and students inside for an early start to the school year.
More than 800 families showed up at Carter G. Woodson Elementary school for its back to school community day event.
It is the fifth year the event has been held at the medical arts magnet school, an event that has grown each and every year.
Woodson is located in the 32209 zip code, one of the lowest income areas of Jacksonvile. Principal Cheryl Quarles-Gaston believes the event will lead to more parent involvement in her school.
The school credits the early kickoff event for part of their success, Woodson is an A school. Andrew Coleman III owns a mortuary and has sponsored the event since day one and gets a lot of satisfaction out of helping his community.
