PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- A 352-pound, female loggerhead sea turtle has been released back into the ocean in South Florida after recovering from a minor injury.

The turtle, known by rescuers as Big Mama, was discovered last week in the St. Lucie Power Plant Intake Canal.

The 80 or 90 year-old turtle had a hole in its upper shell that reached inside her body near her lung. Loggerhead Marinelife Center medical staff fixed the hole and gave the animal antibiotics.

It took 12 staff and volunteers to life the massive turtle from a holding tank and into a cart to take her to the ocean. A crowd of people cheered as she was released.

The Palm Beach Post reports that Big Mama may have just nested. Rescuers discovered she was carrying eggs.
