VERO BEACH, Fla. -- A Vero Beach man was arrested after he assaulted his neighbor for feeding the squirrels in their neighborhood, according to a report from the Indian River County Sheriff's Office.
Eugene Oates, 57, was arrested Saturday on a battery charge.
According to the arrest affidavit, Oates tried to forcibly remove neighbor Ernest Willette from his home.
Oates was upset with Willette feeding the squirrels peanuts because the shells were being deposited on Oates' lawn and driveway, according to the report.
While arguing about the peanut shells, Oates opened Willette's screen door, grabbed his arm and tried to pull him outside, the report stated. Willette said he had to grab the door frame to prevent Oates from pulling him outside.
The arresting deputy wrote in the report that Willette had two scratches on him.
Oates was released from the Indian River County Jail on $500 bond.
