JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The City Council finance committee voted 6-3 on Thursday for the city to subsidize the Mayport Ferry by $449,715.

Last year, the city subsidy was $200,000.

About 30 volunteer members of the Keep the Ferry group were on hand to show their support.

Ferry Commission member Elaine Brown said "I am relieved. The goal is to keep A1A open. Ridership is up, revenue is up and we are making strides to move toward a break even status. The battle is not over, the full council must still approve the final budget."

Commission member and councilman John Crescimbeni told the council that the Jacksonville Transportation Authority may decide to help out since this is a transportation issue, and said a contribution from that independent authority could lower the city's contribution.
