The Powerball jackpot swelled to a dizzying $400 million Sunday after the winning numbers for the multi-state lottery game went unmatched in Saturday night's drawing, officials said.

The nearly half-a-billion-dollar jackpot would have a $223.6 million cash-option value, lottery officials announced on their website.

The five numbers drawn Saturday were 1-17-25-37-44 and the Powerball: 20.

Entering Saturday's Powerball drawing, the jackpot was an estimated $317 million, with a potential cash option value of more than $176 million.

The next drawing is on Wednesday, when the jackpot is expected to grow even larger as big-money seekers jump in to buy tickets.

"It's all based on sales because that's what feeds the jackpot," New York Lottery spokesman Lee Park told NBC News.

On Aug. 7, three winning tickets were sold for a Powerball prize of $448 million, the fourth largest U.S. lottery jackpot ever - two in New Jersey and one in Minnesota.

A group of Ocean County, New Jersey, employees who all put in $6 to purchase lottery tickets and dubbed the "Ocean's 16," split the $448 million haul with Mario Scarnici of South Brunswick, New Jersey, and Paul White of Minnesota.

Powerball is played in 43 states as well as Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
