JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Commissary at NAS JAX is back open. It's a big relief for thousands of military members and their families.

"I was very happy that it's open just because it's going to save me some time," said Lt. Commander Doug Murphy.

The Secretary of Defense ordered hundreds of thousands in the department to come back to work across the county. NAS JAX officials said the commissary is essential to the life of people on base.

The Commissary has been closed since Wednesday, October 2. That meant many had to go off base to more expensive stores.

"We definitely paid more for the same things," said Carole Brocke.

78,000 customers are served at the Commissary every month.

Officials at Mayport told First Coast News their Commissary is scheduled to re-open Tuesday morning.
