A five-year-old boy is in critical condition after being struck by a pickup truck on U.S. 1 in Sharpes, according to Florida Highway Patrol.
The boy, a special needs child from Cocoa, wandered from his parents nearby and was hit by the truck as it traveled northbound on U.S. 1. The driver attempted to swerve away from the boy, but struck him with the front-right portion of the vehicle.
The boy was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando.
FHP said the crash is under investigation.
