JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- For the past several weeks, Public Defender Matt Shirk has been under intense scrutiny by the media and now a special prosecutor has been appointed by the governor.

Two former investigators for the public defender's office resigned over what they say was egregious conduct by the public defender, including the alleged consumption of alcohol in his office and inappropriate relationships with female employees.

Shirk has acknowledged sending improper texts to female subordinates who were later fired.

First Coast News has found emails from one employee who said she had received a call from Tiffany Ice, one of the three women later fired.

In the June email, the employee says Ice questioned whether Shirk's wife was calling her fiance and then hanging up.

Ice was fired four days later.

Another email with the subject "no one has ever had such a request" also sparked our interest.

First Coast News contacted the man who sent that email, the director of the Florida Public Defender's association.

Sheldon Gusky told us that Shirk's chief of staff had asked whether anyone had ever requested security badge data from one of the state's public defenders.

That email was dated August 15, the day after the public defender's office acknowledged deleting the security badge data for Shirk's wife.

But it was four days before Shirk's office said it received a public records request for that data.

First Coast News is continuing to go through all of the emails and phone logs released and will keep you posted.
