JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Neighbors say there's a foul odor in the air, and constant barking has driven them to call Jacksonville city's care system. They claim several dogs are left unattended for weeks at a time, at a house on Amazon Avenue.

Animal control has been called to investigate and several neighbors, including Marion Johns says something seriously needs to be done.

Johns cares for two dogs and a cat at her home along Amazon Avenue. And she says just a couple of doors down the street there's an odd situation that's causing concern.

"I sit at home wondering what they're eating," said Johns.

You can hear dogs barking inside. There's a padlock on the gate and there are no air conditioners in the cases hanging out of the window. According to JEA the power has been off at the property since December of 2011. But neighbors tell First Coast News they do see someone stop by every couple of weeks to feed the dogs.

"I would hate to go in there," said Johns. "I wonder what it smells like."

Johns says the people who care for the animals are not stopping by often enough. And the property is becoming a nuisance for folks who live nearby. Many of them, like Johns say they would like to help but are afraid to step in.

"If I could kick that back door in I would," said Johns. "It hurts. I think about them all of the time. I just don't understand why they haven't taken them out."

A call came in to the city's care system on October 14, and animal control was assigned to investigate.

As for where that investigation now stands, FCN still waiting to finding out.

FCN will continue to follow this story and we'll bring you updates as they come in.
