JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The man who drove his van into the home of a Jacksonville teenager, killing her, was sentenced Thursday morning.

Ismet Sijamhodzic received 12 years in prison, three years probation and his license was permanently revoked.

History of case:

Sijamhodzic already pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide for 17-year-old Janay Jackson's August 2012 death.

In a surprise move, prosecutors had a recording of a woman telling an investigator yesterday that she was with the defendant when she said he took three-and-a-half Zanax pills and smoked marijuana.

Sijamhodzic shook his head repeatedly during that part of the sentencing.

He told an investigator that he had only taken Tylenol and medicine for his ulcer that night.

Following the sentencing, the Jackson family spoke of the pain that they live with every day.

"I always think about that word closure," said Felicia Jackson with her husband, Gerald, standing nearby. "There will never be closure I guess because you just cannot close off that part of your life as much as you try."
