ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- A 13-year-old girl is in critical condition at All Children's Hospital after being shot in the chest by her 14-year-old cousin. Police say the cousin is at large, and a search for him is currently underway.
According to a St. Petersburg Police report, the girl was at her home off Elkcam Boulevard with her mother, cousin and several other children at the time of the incident.
The girl's mother told officials she was in the kitchen when she heard the gun go off, and found her daughter had been shot- seemingly by accident- in her own bedroom by her cousin.
After gathering everyone into her car to drive the girl to All Children's Hospital for treatment, the mother was reportedly involved in a minor hit-and-run accident. Officials are investigating that incident as well.
Once at the hospital, officials say the cousin separated from the family, so they put the premises on lockdown in an effort to find him. After an unsuccessful search, police are working with family members to track him down.
In the meantime, investigators at the scene of the incident have said it appears just one bullet passed through a bedroom wall from an adjoining bathroom where the cousin was seen just before the girl was shot.
Investigators are not sure how the teen got the gun, but they believe it may still be in his possession.
