ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- Heather Prentice said she's worried her homeowner's insurance could spike. It's because of information from an agency that rates the fire protection in a community. That agency is called the ISO, or Insurance Services Office.
Prentice's neighbor saw an $800 hike on his insurance. That worries Prentice.
"It makes me very nervous because I have 3 kids to feed," she said.
The maps are updated every year. Some people are seeing the increase now because their renewal notices are coming. Joyce Ammons is an insurance agent for Ron Roberts & Associates in Orange Park.
"It affects everybody," Ammons said.
She said she's already heard from clients that got that big surprise in the mail.
"They're horrified with the amount of the increase," she said.
Ammons said it's best to be informed. That means checking with your agent to see if there will be a change in your rate. If there is, shop around. Ammons said different agencies do different things with information from the ISO.
In the meantime, Prentice is still working to try to figure out how to pay what could be a very large bill.
"I don't know what we're gonna do at this point," she said.
