ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- A man has been sentenced in a 31-year-old cold case.
Circuit Judge Michael Traynor sentenced William Warren Browning, 57, to life in prison with a 25 year minimum mandatory term.
Browning beat Ralph Wittemore to death on December 11, 1981. After the beating, Browning went through the victim's pockets.
For 31 years, the case remained cold before DNA testing solved the case in 2012. DNA testing of the pockets matched William Warren Browning's DNA.
State Attorney R.J. Larizza said, "This case demonstrates why we should never abandon our efforts to solve cold cases, no matter how old."
