JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A man was sentenced to life in prison in the 2012 killing of a Chicago Bears fan at the Jacksonville Landing.

The life sentence for Matthew Hinson, now 29, came at the end of an 11-hour day.

Hinson pleaded guilty in May to second-degree murder in the stabbing death of Chicago Bears fan William "Chris" Pettry, 42. Hinson killed Pettry by slashing his throat.

Pettry traveled to Jacksonville from Illinois to see the Bears play the Jaguars in October 2012. Pettry was reportedly talking with Hinson's wife before the game at a pub in downtown Jacksonville.

Defense attorneys argued the violence was brought on by Hinson's alcohol abuse and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Before handing down the sentence, Judge Suzanne Bass noted that Hinson had served his country in the Navy and thanked Hinson's parents for standing by him.

Bass also spoke about Pettry and his family and that he was not armed or causing a threat.

Bass called the murder of Pettry appallingly, violent and cruel.
