JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is recommending that motorists avoid Atlantic Boulevard while repairs are made to the road after a water main break.

It was initially thought that the westbound lanes of Atlantic Boulevard would be shut down for the next few days, but JEA has advised JSO that repairs would not take as long as originally thought.

The water main break on Thursday afternoon caused Atlantic Boulevard between St. Johns Bluff Road and Kernan Boulevard to be closed.

According to Gerri Boyce with JEA, a contractor not working for JEA who was doing directional drilling busted the line, hitting a six-inch water main.

Asphalt has been cut out of the eastbound lanes where the asphalt buckled and a truck is on the way to fill that, Boyce said. Eastbound lanes of Atlantic Boulevard were passable by Thursday evening, but JEA will have to go back and do more work afterward.

The main is being dug up on the westbound side right now and crews are trying to make it passable for Thursday evening.

Right now, all eastbound lanes of Atlantic Boulevard are open while one outside westbound lane remains closed due to the water main break.
